Targeting and privacy
Six optional dimensions that only ever narrow the audience. Protected characteristics are blocked at the engine level, minors never see targeted ads, and advertisers only ever see aggregates.
What it is
Targeting narrows who sees your ad. Every dimension is optional — an empty audience reaches everyone eligible — and every dimension you add is disclosed to viewers in the ad's Why am I seeing this? label.
The dimensions
- Interests — matches profile interests.
- Topics — matches only people who chose to boost a topic in their feed preferences. Muted or blocked topics are never used as signals; those are privacy controls, not data.
- Age range — brackets (18–24, 25–34, …), derived from verified ages. People whose age we don't know are excluded from age-targeted ads rather than guessed at.
- Language — matches the languages people list on their profile.
- Platform — iOS, Android, or web.
- Location — country and region.
Adding a dimension always narrows the audience. It never widens it, and unknown data never counts as a match.
What you can't target
Protected characteristics are blocked twice: the campaign form rejects them, and the serving engine independently refuses to serve any campaign whose targeting touches a protected or sensitive topic (health, religion, politics, sexuality, immigration status, and similar). If a campaign somehow carried such a rule, it would serve zero times rather than serve quietly.
Minors
People under 18 only ever see untargeted, pre-cleared ads. Any targeting rule at all excludes minors from the audience entirely.
What advertisers see
Aggregate numbers only — impressions, clicks, spend, unique viewer counts. Never who saw or clicked your ad, and never profile data.
